Windows RDP – CredSSP encryption oracle remediation

I have encountered this error on several systems over the past couple of months while attempting to create an RDP session to a Windows remote machine:

I found adding the registry entry detailed below to the client machine the quickest fix:

Create REG_DWORD: AllowEncryptionOracle
Value: 2

You can run the following cmd from an elevated prompt to apply the registry config:

REG ADD HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\CredSSP\Parameters\ /v AllowEncryptionOracle /t REG_DWORD /d 2

As per MS the issue was caused by a CredSSP update:

‘The most common scenario is that the client has the CredSSP update installed, and the Encryption Oracle Remediation policy setting does not allow an insecure RDP connection to a server that does not have the CredSSP update installed.’

VMware: Enable Crisp Mouse Control on WIN2K8R2 & WIN7

If you feel like the mouse movement within the direct console of a Window 2008R2 or Windows7 Vitual machine is sluggish then the chances are you are using the SVGA video driver supplied by VMware Tools and not the smoother performing WDDM video driver. In order to establish if you are running on the “Standard VGA Graphics Adapter” you can take a look in device manager:

To update the display adapter driver to the VMware WDDM driver browse to the following location and load the WDDM Video Driver:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\Drivers\wddm_video

Please note that a reboot of the virtual machine is required to enable the new video driver.
