VMware VCF version: 3.9.1
In this post we detail how to Expand a VCF deployed instance of vRealize Operations Manager (vROps) leveraging automation that is built-in to VMware SDDC Manager. SDDC manager allows you to deploy additional data nodes one node at a time in order to expand the size of a vROps analytics cluster.
In this example vROPs was initially deployed as a single node and as you can see below the NSX Edge LB was also deployed (by default) even though no HA was configured due to only being a single node deployment!
The following slides detail the configuration of the initial single node vROPs deployment, which is worth reviewing before proceeding with the expansion:
Before proceeding with the deployment ensure a DNS entry, FQDN & IP Address for the additional vROps node has been configured. This method of expansion has the advantage of only requiring DNS/IP details for the additional node being deployed, all Edge LB config is automatically updated as part of the SDDC workflow to reflect the second vROPs data node.
From within the SDDC Manager console navigate to Administration -> vRealize Suite -> vRealize Operations and click ‘EXPAND’
Select Data Node and entering the required deployment details and monitor progress of the vROPs expansion via the associated consoles (SDDC Mgr., vCenter & vRSLCM):
Logging into vCenter you will notice the NSX Edge LB configuration has been updated to reflect the addition of the second node:
On successful completion of the vROps expansion log into vROps console via SDDC Manager, navigate to Administration->vRealize Suite->vRealize Operations and click the link vRealize Operations, from here you can review the vROPs expansion, note the presence of a new ‘DATA Node’:
The final step is to enable High Availability which converts the Data Node to a Master Replica, to do so login to the admin portal of the vROPs cluster (https://vrops.domain/admin) and click ‘ENABLE’ which initiates the HA configuration process:
Note that a vROPs cluster restart is required as part of the HA enabling process, click ‘OK’:
Confirm the cluster restart by clicking ‘YES’:
HA enabling process completes:
End result is we now have a ‘Master Replica’ and vROPs is functioning as a HA cluster:
Hope that helps!
